Travelers journal
The Vespa purred to life beneath me, and just like that, we were off – weaving through Hanoi’s labyrinthine streets with the wind in our hair and the scent of street food in the air.
Our first stop was the majestic St. Joseph’s Cathedral, its Gothic spires a striking contrast to the surrounding hustle. From there, we zipped past the bustling Dong Xuan Market, where the colours and aromas were as vibrant as the city itself.
The real adventure began as we delved into the backstreets, uncovering hidden gems and local eateries. Each bite of Bún Chả and Bánh Tôm told a story, rich with flavour and tradition.
At Train Street, the thrill was palpable. Standing mere inches from the tracks as a train thundered by was both exhilarating and surreal.
We ended our journey with a cup of Hanoi’s famed egg coffee. Watching our guide whip up the creamy concoction was a treat in itself, and the taste? Simply unforgettable.
As we returned to our hotel, the city's lights twinkled around us, and I couldn't help but feel a deep appreciation for the vibrant tapestry that is Hanoi.

The Itinerary
The city was already buzzing when the Vespa pulled up outside our hotel – the kind of buzz that makes Hanoi feel alive before breakfast.
Strapping on a helmet, I climbed on behind the driver and off we went, darting through the narrow lanes like we were part of the morning rush.
We cruised past tree-lined boulevards and crumbling colonial facades, the hum of scooters and chatter folding around us. St. Joseph’s Cathedral rose suddenly from behind a tangle of shopfronts, still and elegant in the middle of the madness.
The market came next – Dong Xuan – overflowing with colours, smells, and the gentle chaos that somehow always works in Vietnam.
Then came the food. I’d barely caught my breath before we were tucking into a sizzling plate of Bún Chả, smoky from the grill and alive with herbs and heat. One stop later, Bánh Tôm – crispy prawn fritters I didn’t know I needed in my life.
We wove through alleyways between bites, the real Hanoi unfolding in corners I’d never have found on my own.
At Train Street, we paused with coffee in hand, just in time for the low rumble in the distance. The train thundered past, so close you could feel the metal in your chest – surreal and strangely beautiful.
Our final stop was egg coffee – rich, frothy, and oddly comforting. Our guide whisked the yolk and sugar with the kind of pride you reserve for family recipes. We sipped slowly as the sun dipped behind the buildings, casting long shadows down the alleys we’d just explored.
As the Vespa dropped us back, I realised how much of the city we’d seen in just a few hours – the grandeur and the grit, the hidden food stalls and wide open boulevards.
It wasn’t just a tour. It felt like Hanoi had let us in for a little while, and we were leaving full – not just from the food, but from the stories.
