If you’re planning a trip to northern Vietnam, you’ll quickly notice three names appearing again and again: Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay, and Bai Tu Long Bay.

They sit side by side, share the same limestone scenery and calm green water, yet offer surprisingly different experiences. Choosing the right one can make a real difference to how your trip feels.

Understanding the Difference

All three bays form part of the same karst landscape in the Gulf of Tonkin. The difference isn’t the scenery, it’s the routes, pace, and number of boats.

Ha Long Bay follows the most established cruise routes and includes the most famous sights. Lan Ha Bay is quieter and more nature-focused, while Bai Tu Long Bay is the least visited and feels more traditional.

Ha Long Bay: The Classic Route

Ha Long Bay is the most well known and most developed option. It’s where you’ll find the famous caves and viewpoints that appear in guidebooks.

Typical itineraries include stops such as Sung Sot Cave, Titop Island, and Hang Luon, which often involve walking, steps, and short climbs to viewpoints.

This bay suits travellers who are short on time or visiting the region for the first time. Day cruises and one night itineraries are easy to arrange, and there’s a wide choice of boats at different comfort levels.

The trade-off is that Ha Long Bay is busier, particularly on day cruises and during peak season. Families with children should also be aware that some of the main attractions involve stairs and uphill walking, which may not suit everyone.

Lan Ha Bay: Quieter and More Relaxed

Lan Ha Bay lies just south of Ha Long Bay, close to Cat Ba Island. The scenery is equally impressive but the atmosphere is noticeably calmer.

Cruises here focus less on large caves and more on natural lagoons, swimming areas, and kayaking. Activities often include visiting Dark and Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat, with no walking inside caves and plenty of optional time to relax on board.

For longer itineraries, especially three day, two night cruises, Lan Ha Bay routes often include a visit to Viet Hai Village on Cat Ba Island. Exploring by electric car or bicycle through quiet countryside is a highlight for many travellers.

Lan Ha Bay cruises may depart either from Ha Long City or from Cat Ba Island. When booking, it’s important to check whether transport from Hanoi is included or whether you need to travel to Cat Ba independently.

This bay suits travellers who want beautiful scenery with fewer crowds and a slower pace.

Bai Tu Long Bay: Quiet and Traditional

Bai Tu Long Bay lies to the north-east of Ha Long Bay and sees far fewer cruise boats.

Routes here feel more open and peaceful, with visits to fishing villages and quieter anchor points. Boats tend to be more traditional in style, and itineraries usually run for two nights or more.

There are fewer cruise options overall, but the experience is often more serene. Bai Tu Long Bay is particularly well suited to travellers who prioritise space, calm surroundings, and photography.

Which Bay Is Right for You?

Choosing the right bay depends more on travel style than scenery.

Ha Long Bay works well for first-time visitors or those with limited time. Lan Ha Bay is a strong choice for travellers looking for fewer crowds, swimming, and kayaking. Bai Tu Long Bay suits those who prefer a slower pace and quieter routes.

There’s no better or worse option, just different experiences.

A Practical Note for Families and Older Travellers

Families often gravitate towards Lan Ha Bay due to calmer water and optional activities. Older travellers frequently prefer Bai Tu Long Bay for its relaxed pace. Ha Long Bay remains a good option for short trips where logistics need to be simple.

Matching the bay to your energy level matters far more than choosing based on photos alone.

One Last Tip

The quality of the boat often matters as much as the bay itself. A well-run cruise on a busy route can feel far better than a poorly managed one in a quieter area. Crew, timing, and how the itinerary flows all make a noticeable difference.

If You Can’t Decide

Some travellers choose to experience both sides of the region by starting with a Ha Long Bay day cruise, staying overnight in Ha Long City, then continuing to Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay for a quieter overnight cruise.

It’s a surprisingly effective way to see the highlights, slow things down afterwards, and enjoy the fact that all meals are taken care of on board.

Choosing the right bay turns a good trip into a great one.
