April and May are often described as “good months” to travel in Vietnam. That’s true, but it doesn’t explain why.

In 2026, this period combines improving beach weather, greener landscapes in the north, and a four-day national holiday at the end of April that will significantly affect domestic travel.

If you understand how it works, it can be an excellent time to visit. If you don’t, it can feel unexpectedly crowded.

The 30 April – 1 May Holiday in 2026

Vietnam celebrates two national holidays back-to-back each year.

30 April is Reunification Day, marking the end of the war in 1975 and the reunification of the country. It remains one of the most significant dates in Vietnam’s modern history, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City.

1 May is International Labour Day, also a nationwide public holiday.

In 2026, 30 April falls on a Thursday and 1 May falls on a Friday. Combined with the weekend, this creates a four-day public holiday from Thursday 30 April to Sunday 3 May 2026.

That extended break has a clear impact on travel.

When much of the country has four consecutive days off, people move.

Flights fill quickly. Trains sell out. Ha Long Bay cruises operate at full capacity. Popular destinations such as Da Nang, Ninh Binh and Phu Quoc become noticeably busier with domestic travellers.

It isn’t chaotic, but it is one of the busiest local travel windows of the year.

If your trip overlaps with 30 April to 3 May 2026, booking early is essential.

What the Atmosphere Feels Like

Reunification Day is not a commercial holiday. Streets are lined with red flags, public buildings display national banners, and there’s a visible sense of pride in the air.

Families travel together. Restaurants feel lively. Coastal towns carry more energy than usual.

For some travellers, that atmosphere adds something memorable. For others seeking quiet scenery and minimal crowds, it can feel intense.

Neither reaction is wrong. It simply depends on expectations.

What the Weather Is Like in April–May 2026

April remains one of the most balanced months across Vietnam. May begins shifting toward early summer.

In northern Vietnam, April is warm but manageable. Hanoi is comfortable for walking, Ha Long Bay often has good visibility, and Ninh Binh’s rice fields begin turning greener. By May, temperatures rise and humidity increases, but landscapes look vibrant.

In central Vietnam, beach conditions improve significantly. Da Nang and Hoi An see stronger sunshine and calmer seas compared to earlier months.

In the south, April is hot and dry. By May, short afternoon showers begin appearing, usually brief but heavy.

Overall, April feels slightly more comfortable. May feels greener and warmer.

Is April–May 2026 a Good Time to Visit?

Yes, with context.

If you are travelling outside the 30 April – 3 May 2026 holiday window, this remains a strong shoulder-season period. You get good scenery and improving coastal weather before peak summer tourism begins.

If you are travelling during the holiday itself, smooth travel is still possible with proper planning. Cruises, private transfers and structured tours continue to operate normally. What becomes harder is last-minute availability and spontaneous changes.

Who This Period Suits Best

April 2026 works well for travellers combining north and central Vietnam in one route. It’s comfortable enough for active days and balanced itineraries.

May 2026 suits those who don’t mind rising temperatures and want greener landscapes, especially in places like Ninh Binh and Sapa before heavier summer rains arrive.

If your priority is quiet viewpoints and minimal domestic tourism, avoid travelling between 30 April and 3 May 2026.

The Bottom Line for 2026

Vietnam in April and May 2026 offers strong conditions, but it includes one major domestic travel spike at the end of April.

Plan around the four-day holiday. Book transport and cruises early. Structure your route carefully.

Do that, and this can still be one of the most rewarding times of year to explore Vietnam.
