Vietnam Weather by Month: North, Central and South Vietnam
Vietnam may look simple on a map, but the weather changes a lot between the north, centre and south.
Northern Vietnam has clearer seasons, with cool winters, hot summers, misty mountain weather and rice terrace seasons. Central Vietnam has some of the country's best beach weather, but it can also be affected by heavy rain and storms later in the year. Southern Vietnam stays warm year-round, with a clearer dry season and rainy season.
This is why there is no single best month for the whole country. The best time to visit Vietnam depends on where you are going, how much of the country you want to cover, and what kind of trip you are planning.

Best Months for Northern Vietnam
Northern Vietnam is usually at its best in spring and autumn.
March, April, October and November are often the most comfortable months for Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and mountain areas. The weather is not too hot, the scenery is strong, and travel days usually feel easier.
For Sapa, Ha Giang and Mu Cang Chai, September and October are especially popular because of the rice terraces. This is when some areas turn golden before harvest, although mountain weather can still change quickly.

Best Months for Central Vietnam
Central Vietnam usually works best from around February to August, especially for Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue.
March to May is a particularly good window, with warm weather before the strongest summer heat arrives. June to August can be hot, but it is good for beach time if you plan sightseeing earlier or later in the day.
The main period to watch is September to November, when heavy rain and storms can affect Central Vietnam more than other parts of the country.

Best Months for Southern Vietnam
Southern Vietnam is warm all year, but the dry season is usually easier for travel.
December to April is generally the most comfortable time for Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc. The weather is warm, sunny and good for day trips, walking tours and beach stays.
From May to October, rain becomes more common. It does not usually stop travel completely, but plans should stay flexible. Showers often come quickly and clear again.

Best Months If You Want to Travel Across the Whole Country
If your plan is to travel across the whole of Vietnam, the easiest months are usually March, April, November and early December.
These months often give you the best balance across all three regions. Northern Vietnam is usually comfortable, Central Vietnam is generally more manageable, and Southern Vietnam is either dry or moving into better weather.
March and April are especially good if you want a smoother north-to-south itinerary with Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.
November and early December can also work very well, especially if you want cooler weather in the north and better beach or city weather in the south. Central Vietnam can still be a little unpredictable in November, so it is worth keeping some flexibility around Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue.
Final Thoughts
Vietnam weather is regional, not national.
January can be cold and misty in Sapa, but sunny and warm in Phu Quoc. July can be hot and rainy in Hanoi, but still good for beaches in Central Vietnam. October can be beautiful in northern rice terrace areas, while Hoi An may need more weather flexibility.
The best Vietnam itinerary is not just about choosing the best month. It is about matching the right places to the right season.
