February can be a lovely time to visit Vietnam, but it is also one of the months where planning matters more than usual.
The weather is generally good for travel. Northern Vietnam is still cool, Central Vietnam is becoming brighter, and Southern Vietnam is warm and dry. But the main thing to understand is Tet, Vietnamese Lunar New Year.
Tet is the biggest holiday of the year in Vietnam. It is when families travel home, cities decorate with flowers, businesses adjust opening hours, and transport becomes much busier than normal.
Tet does not make Vietnam a bad place to visit. It just means you need to plan your hotels, transfers, cruises and key travel days more carefully.

When Is Tet in 2027?
Tet follows the lunar calendar, so the date changes every year.
For 2027, Vietnamese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. The expected public holiday period is commonly listed from 5 February to 11 February 2027, although the official dates can be confirmed closer to the time.
In real travel terms, Tet affects more than just the official holiday dates. Many Vietnamese people start travelling home before Tet, and some businesses may close earlier or reopen a few days later.
A practical way to think about it is:
Tet Period | What It Usually Feels Like for Travellers |
1 week before Tet | Busy domestic travel Flights, trains and buses sell faster Flower markets and decorations appear Good festive atmosphere |
Main Tet days | Quieter cities Some restaurants and shops closed Fewer local services Best to avoid too many transfers |
3–5 days after Tet | Services slowly reopen Domestic travel still busy Tourist areas return to normal gradually |
Around 10 days total | This is the period where travellers should plan more carefully, especially for transport and hotels |
February Weather in Vietnam
February is usually a comfortable month for travel across Vietnam.
Region | Popular Places | February Weather | What to Expect |
North Vietnam | Hanoi Sapa Ninh Binh Ha Long Bay | Cool Misty mornings Cold in the mountains | Good for sightseeing Bring layers Ha Long Bay can be misty Sapa may have fog |
Central Vietnam | Da Nang Hoi An Hue | Mild Brighter days Less rain than late year | Good for walking Comfortable for old towns Beach weather can be mixed |
South Vietnam | Ho Chi Minh City Mekong Delta Phu Quoc | Warm Dry Sunny | Good for beaches Good for river trips Hotter in the middle of the day |
Weather is not usually the main challenge in February. The bigger thing is timing your travel properly around Tet.

What Tet Can Affect During Your Trip
Tet can affect travel in small but important ways.
It can change transport availability, hotel prices, restaurant opening hours and how easy it is to arrange things last minute. Tourist services still operate in many places, especially in major destinations, but the rhythm is slower and less predictable during the main holiday days.
The main things to think about are:
Travel Detail | What to Know During Tet |
Transfers | Private cars and drivers can be busier Prices may be higher on peak dates Book airport pickups and long transfers early |
Domestic flights | Popular routes sell out faster Prices often rise before and after Tet Leave more time at airports |
Trains and buses | Very busy before and after Tet Good seats and cabins can sell early Not ideal to book last minute |
Ha Long Bay cruises | Cruises usually operate Cabins and shuttle buses may be limited Book earlier than usual |
Hotels | Tourist hotels stay open Good rooms can sell out faster Some services may run on holiday hours |
Restaurants | Hotel restaurants and tourist areas usually have options Small local places may close for a few days |
Tours | Some tours still run Private guides and drivers may be limited Confirm everything in advance |
Transfers Are the Main Thing to Plan Early
If you are travelling around Tet, transfers should not be left until the last minute.
This includes airport pickups, Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, Hanoi to Ninh Binh, Hanoi to Sapa, Da Nang to Hoi An, and any longer private car journeys. Drivers may be busier, prices may be different, and availability can be tighter.
If you are travelling with family, luggage or children, a pre-booked private transfer is usually the safest option. It gives you a confirmed driver, clear timing and less stress on the day.
If you are travelling independently, it is still possible. Just be aware that Tet is not the best time to rely on last-minute transport, especially for longer routes.
Cruises, Hotels and Tours During Tet
Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay cruises usually continue operating during Tet, but they should be booked early. Cabins, shuttle buses and private transfers can fill up faster than usual.
Hotels in major tourist areas normally stay open, but popular properties may sell earlier, especially in Hanoi, Hoi An, Da Nang, Phu Quoc and Ha Long Bay.
Tours can still run, but guides, drivers and local suppliers may have limited availability during the main Tet days. If there are key experiences you really want, it is better to confirm them before you travel.
Should You Travel During Tet?
Yes, you can travel during Tet, but the best plan is a simple one.
The main Tet days are not ideal for a packed itinerary with too many transfers. It is better to stay in one place, take a cruise, relax at a beach hotel, or keep the route slower.
The days before Tet can be very interesting, with flower markets, decorations and a festive atmosphere. The main Tet days are quieter. The days after Tet slowly return to normal.
For most travellers, the best approach is to book important services in advance and avoid moving too much during the peak holiday dates.
Final Thoughts
February is a good month to visit Vietnam, but Tet changes how travel works.
The weather is usually comfortable, and the festive atmosphere can make the trip feel special. The main thing is to plan ahead. Book hotels, transfers, cruises and key routes early, especially if your dates fall within the 10-day window around Tet.
If everything is arranged in advance, February can be a smooth and memorable time to travel in Vietnam. If you are doing everything yourself, just be aware that Tet is a national holiday, and last-minute plans may not be as easy as usual.
